Where to start
  • School Buses are one of the safest modes of transportation in the United States.  Part of that reason is the stringent certification and ongoing requirements for school bus drivers.
  • To become a school bus driver for South Western School District you must:
  1. Successfully complete the application and interview process.
  2. Attend twenty (20) hours of classroom session.
  3. Successfully complete a DOT physical.
  4. Pass drug and alcohol screening test.
  5. Pass driving and PA criminal record check.
  6. Pass PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
  7. Obtain Commercial Driver License (CDL) class B permit, "P" and "S" endorsement, lifting "Air Brake Restriction."
  8. Pass written test administered by Pennsylvania State Examiner.
  9. Complete a minimum of twenty (20) hour Behind The Wheel training instructed by SWSD state certified instructors.
  10. Pass PA DOT Behind The Wheel test, administered by PA State Examiners.
  11. Receive CDL with P and S endorsements
  12. Receive approval from SWSD School Board.
  • You now have the privilege to transport students safely to and from school.
